Uber, Bolt customers to pay more as Lagos introduces new taxes

Customers are set to pay more for ride-hailing services such as Uber and Bolt due to a new regulation being introduced by the Lagos State Government. This comes barely weeks after the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration increased LAGBUS fares by 46 per cent The new regulation for e-hailing taxing services is set to come into effect on August 20, 2020. This is according to a document titled, ‘Guidelines for Online Hailing Business Operation of Taxi in Lagos State 2020’ issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation. According to Part 4.1 subsection 5 of the document titled, ‘e-Hailing Taxi Operation’, all drivers must pay 10 per cent generated on every trip to the Lagos State Government. “All operators of e-hailing taxi service must pay the state government 10 per cent service tax on each transaction paid by passengers to the operators,” the document partly read. The new policy also mandates all e-hailing taxi firms to pay N25m yearly to the state government per 1,001 vehicles...

UK Falls into Recession For The First Time in 11 Years Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

A report from the Office for National Statistics stated that the country’s gross domestic product, GDP, is estimated to have fallen by a record 20.4% between April and June 2020, making it the second consecutive quarterly decline after it fell by 2.2% between January to March 2020. According to the report, the collapse in output was driven by the closure of shops, hotels, restaurants, schools, and car repair shops due to the coronavirus pandemic. The services sector, which powers four-fifths of the economy, also suffered the biggest quarterly decline on record. A Nigerian man has sparked a debate online following his revelation on Sallah day about how his mum tried to ‘protect’ the family. The man known as Mr Alan shared a story of how his mum accepted meat given to her family in the spirit of the Eid-el-kabir celebration but she ended up using anointing oil to refry it. Africa’s biggest grocery retailer, Shoprite, has announced plans to discontinue operations in Nigeria, after 15 years. The South African retailer in a statement released on Monday, revealed it has started a formal process to consider the potential sale of all or a majority stake in its supermarkets in Nigeria. The Lagos State Government has shut down the Eti-Osa Isolation Centre with effect from Friday night. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Saturday during a briefing on the COVID-19 pandemic at the State House in Marina. According to him, the Agidingbi Isolation Centre will also be closed and the patients relocated to a larger capacity centre – IndoCentre in the Anthony area, which would be soon be inaugurated. “We have since, last night, shut down our Eti-Osa Isolation Center and will be shutting down our Agidingbi Isolation Center and moving all the patients there to our soon to be commissioned IndoCenter. “Furthermore, our Infectious Diseases Hospital in Yaba is now also gradually being reverted back to its status as a hospital to cater to all forms of infectious diseases. A Nigerian healthcare assistant who raped a 73-year-old pensioner in her nursing home bed during lockdown at a Co Dublin facility in the early hours of April 3, 2020, has been jailed for 11 years Emmanuel Adeniji had denied rape but later pleaded guilty after his DNA matched a sample from the woman with Alzheimer’s. The victim, who was attacked at 3am, remains terrified the predator will return to her room. The judge described his crime as “an egregious breach of trust by a qualified and experienced healthcare worker”. Adeniji is a trained healthcare professional who has worked in healthcare for 15 years. He was recorded on CCTV going in and coming out of the woman’s room at the nursing home. She was found later that morning in a distressed state by a staff member doing her rounds.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that worship centres in the state will reopen on Friday, August 7. Sanwo-Olu confirmed this during a media briefing on Saturday. While churches and mosques will be allowed to reopen, nightclubs will remain shut. The Governor also increased public gatherings capacity from 20 to 50 people. Restaurants in the state can now operate eat-in services from Friday, August 14. Sanwo-Olu also confirmed that exit students in the state will resume on Monday, August 3.

Former Nigeria International Dies After Fall From His Apartment In New York

The former Nigerian Super Eagles Star, Musa Nosa Kadiri is dead. He died at the age of 53 after a fall in his apartment in New York. The resultant fall reportedly led to a bleeding in his brain after which he went into coma before he died. His burial is scheduled to hold on Thursday, July 30 at 491 Dekalb Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. Musa Nosa Kadiri started off his football career on the streets of his hometown in Benin. He went ahead to play in local teams where he won both local and national leagues. He also played professional soccer in Europe before retiring into coaching. Apart from football, Musa Nosa Kadiri was also involved in non-profit avenues for children as he founded the Young Rock Soccer Academy in 2002 where he trained kids between the ages of 4-12 in the celebration of soccer. May his soul rest in peace.

An indigenous company called JET Motor Company has manufactured the nation’s first electric vehicle called JET EV. Tenants now to pay six per cent stamp duty, says FIRS

THE Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has directed landlords and property agents to charge six percent Stamp Duty on all tenancy and lease agreements. The landlords/ property agents are to remit such collections to FIRS “so that they do not run foul of the Stamp Duty Act.” The tax agency gave the directive through a statement on Wednesday by Director, Communications and Liaison Department Abdullahi Ahmad. He said: “Property-related transactions like tenancy or lease agreement fall under the Ad Valorem category of the stamp duty which attracts six per cent duty payable in percentage of the total value or sum of the tenancy or lease,” Ahmad explained in the statement. According to him, the burden of payment of the six per cent “lies on the beneficiary of the tenancy or lease agreement, whom the Stamp Duty Act identified as the tenant or renter.” He added that “the responsibility of collection and remittance fall on the landlord or agent in charge of the property for lease or rent.
